Pastor's Update - Week of September 6, 2010
Love God, Love People

This is it. The start of AWANA Club for the Fall Semester is September 8. The fun starts at 5:15 with dinner followed by AWANA starting at 6:00. Be sure to arrive in time to get signed in.

As we look to the excitement of AWANA we need a meal that will give us energy to have fun. Therefore, Pam Flores and Jean Richardson are cooking up a build your own taco salad and dessert. As a reminder, AWANA leaders, teachers, and workers can begin eating at 5:00 p.m. The meal never costs more than $7 for a family. If you will be our guest for the first time, there is no charge for the meal. After the meal, stay for the Adult Bible Study, Youth B.O.M.B. Squad, and children’s activities. Childcare is provided for infants through toddlers.

When I say 100 you say___? How many of you remember the Tithe Rap video from Sunday? The answer is 10 meaning 10%. When a pastor teaches on tithe there are usually one of two comments made. Did you have to? Or, that was what we have been discussing at home. This week I must say, I didn’t have any of the first comment. One comment that really touched my heart was by a young boy who came up to me during the “Fun Fest” and said, “Pastor, I don’t have much to give but I want to give God these three seashells.” He continued by saying, “I don’t expect anything in return, He can do with them whatever He wants.” Wow, that said it all. This young man had paid attention and remembered that we are not to give expecting something in return. May God always keep my attitude toward giving like the attitude of this young boy.

The Bible sets what I believe are baseline standards for giving to the work of the Lord. Abram set the standard in Genesis chapter 14 when he gave 10% of what he had to the High Priest Melchizedek. This later became law for Israel. The 10% was set aside as holy, set aside for the work of the Lord. As believers we should strive to follow the example set by Abram, and give 10% back to the Lord. Most importantly, in the scripture we find the following statement from Paul: 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” We should give with a glad heart. Set your sights on the Lord and His work. Start and begin to work your way to giving 10%. God will bless you beyond measure. Malachi 3:10 tells us, 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

Last week I shared with you the three books that Paul wrote during his first imprisonment in Rome. I then asked what other books Paul wrote. Did you find the names of the other books? Paul wrote 13 books of the Bible. Here they are: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians,
1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon.

In the Pastor’s Update last week I asked that you come alongside the church staff and begin to pray about starting a mission church. I trust that you have. As we have been praying, we do feel that Manhattan is where we need to plant a new church. Pastor Jacob has been gathering demographic information on some of the areas in Manhattan. There is much more work to be done prior to planting the church. Pastor Jacob has begun building a website for the church plant. Check it out at www.veritas-church.org. Pray without ceasing that God would guide us and provide resources for the church plant.

Did you enjoy the “Family Fun Fest” picnic? Thank you to everyone that worked so hard to make this a success. From the tent crew, to the cooks, to the decorations, and to everyone else who played some role. We could not have done it without you. Your service to the Kingdom is appreciated.

Speaking of service to the Kingdom, are you allowing God to use you by serving Him? First Southern Baptist Church of Junction City has a vision to develop every member to be a minister. I don’t mean a preacher; although some may follow God’s calling in this. Being a minister simply means that everyone is serving in one of our ministries. If you are a believer and a member, but not serving, let me encourage you to begin serving in one of the church ministries. God has a ministry for you. If you are not a member, let me encourage you to become a member of this body of believers, and then begin the journey to becoming a minister.

Start your journey by attending our Membership 101 class. The class is scheduled for September 26, from 1 – 4 in the afternoon. This first class will cover membership, baptism, history of the church, expectations of a body of believers, and provide a chance for families to get to know each other better and become involved in small groups. Although this is set up for new members, or those interested in becoming members, the entire congregation is invited to attend. Membership 101 is the entry level class and, using college lingo, is a prerequisite for the upcoming 201, 301, and 401 classes. Lunch will be provided. There will also be activities for the children. Amy Davis will be teaching “I’m a Christian Now” for all children 1st-6th grade at the same time the adults are in the 101 class. Nursery and childcare will be provided for infants through Kindergarten. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the foyer, or call the church office, and let Vickie know that you will be attending.

After attending Membership 101 you will want to continue your study by attending Spiritual Maturity 201, Ministry 301, and Missions 401. The goal is for everyone in our church to attend all 4 of these basic classes. To make this even more enticing, the first group to attend all four classes - 101, 201, 301, and 401 - will have their names placed into a drawing for a one night stay at the Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City. The first opportunity this drawing could occur would be the end of February for those on the fast track. This means that between September and November you will have taken 101, 201 and 301. Then you will have taken 401 in February. The current plan is to offer 101, 201, and 301 monthly beginning in October with 401 beginning in February. You may not “clep out” so don’t even think about it. The classes will take place during the Sunday morning Bible Study hours and will take three weeks to complete. The schedule for October and November is:
October                                                   November
9:30     Membership 201                          9:30     Membership 101 and 301
11:00  Membership 101 and 301              11:00  Membership 201

We are a few short weeks away from one of the coolest ministries we do, as we conduct the “Stuff the Truck” ministry. Thank you to Susan Allee for stepping up to lead the “Stuff the Truck” ministry. If you have already signed up to help, let me say thank you. We still have additional need for volunteers. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the foyer. Last year we collected the single largest one time donation that the Geary County Food Pantry has ever received. This year the goal is to provide even more food to help those in need. This truly is a ministry that meets a great need. Thank you in advance for serving.

Life Groups are coming. Most of you are familiar with the small group concept. We want to call the groups Life Groups since it is about living life in communities. Life Groups are more than just a place to conduct a Bible Study; they are a place to build relationships. Life Group Leader Training will take place the end of September with the Life Groups starting the first week of October. Life Groups will be meeting throughout the week to accommodate various schedules. Please be in prayer about which group you will be attending, or even leading a Life Group in your home. You will be prepared to be a leader through this Life Group Training.

7But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” (2 Corinthians 8:7 NIV)

There will be no Pastor’s Update the week of September 13.

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us.

Pastor's Update - Week of August 30, 2010
Love God, Love People

Are you ready for some football? This Friday is the opening game for the Junction City High School Football team. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. Come out and have some fun. You can purchase tickets at the gate. If you go to the game, look for me, I will be setting on the home side one section away from the band.

So what is on the menu for this Wednesday evening? Are you ready? Sloppy Joe Casserole, Green Beans, Broccoli, Green Salad, Ice Cream and Cookies. The chefs for the evening are Barbara Weeks and Patti Jo Whitten.  As a reminder, AWANA leaders, teachers, and workers can begin eating at 5:00 p.m. When was the last time, other than here at church, that you fed the family for $7? If you will be our guest for the first time, there is no charge for the meal. After the meal, stay for the Bible Study and children’s activities. This week the AWANA program will conduct a dry-run with our workers children. Childcare is provided for infants up through pre-kindergarten. The youth B.O.M.B. squad meets at 6:00 p.m. and the adult Bible Study begins at 6:15 p.m. in the sanctuary. The adults will be looking at Habakkuk chapter 3.

What an amazing day of worship and celebration we had this past Sunday. I have heard numerous comments that the testimonies were very touching. My plan is to periodically have someone give their testimony of what God is doing in their lives. What about that video testimony? Pastor Gabriel will be using this media form more as we look at more testimonies and video announcements. Thank you to everyone that gave their testimony (Kelly, Joel, Carrie, Bobbie, and Miles). As I closed out each celebrations I challenged all of us to obey the Great Commission “To go and make disciples.” One way of making disciples is to begin with intentional, genuine relationships. I shared that if we, the church, the church universal, would obey the Great Commandment, the gates of hell would not prevail against the offensive that would be launched by God’s people. I believe that God is calling the church to step out and do what we are commanded to do. Are you willing to begin developing intentional relationships that will lead others to Christ? I pray you are.

Did you have a chance to research what Paul did during his first imprisonment in Rome? He wrote three books.
            Ephesians: A.D. 60
            Philippians: A.D. 61
            Colossians: A.D. 60
Paul wrote other books. What other books did he write and when did he write them?

The leadership team met this past Sunday evening to discuss ministries and needs of the church. One need is to pay off our current building loan. Since we have decided to delay a building campaign, many have asked me if they can give a monthly gift to help pay the loan off early. The answer is yes. My goal is to have the loan paid off in twelve months. If you would like to give a onetime gift or a monthly gift, above your tithe, please mark on your check “Building Fund.” Our treasure will then know where those funds are to be used. Paying off the loan will free up money that can be used for other Kingdom events/ministries. In addition to paying off the loan we want to improve areas within the sanctuary. This includes many making the stage area bigger, and upgrading the sound system.

Another topic discussed was planting a church. The church staff has been praying that God would open a door for a church plant. There are now two possible opportunities for us to plant a church. One plant would be a Spanish work here in JC. The other would be a church plant in Manhattan. Many of you have already heard that Pastor Jacob is very much interested in planting a church in Manhattan. What a great opportunity the Lord has placed within our grasp. Instead of viewing this as Pastor Jacob possibly leaving the church, we should rejoice in the possibility of God sending out a family from our church to grow the Kingdom. Please come along side the staff and pray for wisdom as we seek God’s will.

This Wednesday September 1, is our AWANA Club dry-run. All activities will run as if we are having a regularly scheduled evening. This is an evening for our workers and their children. Next Wednesday, September 8, is the official kick-off for AWANA. We are starting off with round up night. I am very excited to see what God has in store for our program this year.

Sunday, 5 September, is our “Family Fun Fest.” We will have a pot luck picnic in the field next to the church. The church will provide the hamburgers, buns, and drinks. We are asking that families bring one or two covered dishes to go along with the burgers. You may also bring deserts. Our Labor Day picnic has grown to be one of the largest picnics we have. Won’t you plan to stay with us and fellowship? I look forward to seeing each of you this Sunday.

Stuff the Truck is on. Thank you to those who have already signed up. There are additional needs for volunteers. Can you spare 3-4 hours for a couple days during October and November. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the foyer for you to sign-up to help. I remember one testimony from a young lady who donated food to “Stuff the Truck.” As she walked into Dillons one of our workers gave her a slip of paper that explained what we were doing. About 45 minutes later, this same lady came out with a grocery basket filled with food items. As I thanked her, she stated, “I was once without income and the local food pantry met the needs of my family. Now I am able to give. I came to the store to purchase groceries for my family but felt more led to give everything I purchased.” I asked if she had enough for her own needs and she replied, “God has blessed me with plenty.” This truly is a ministry that meets a great need. Thank you in advance for serving.

Our church family will soon jump start our small group/life groups. Small groups are more than just a place to conduct a Bible Study; they are a place to build relationships. They are a place for friends to come together for a time of fellowship, study, and fun. You have heard me say that small groups must become one of our core ministries.   We are going to begin with five or six pilot groups. As we set the launch date, there will be times for you to speak with a leader to determine if the group is the right fit for you.   Groups will be meeting at throughout the week to accommodate various schedules. As we grow these pilot groups will soon multiply and start other groups. My prayer is for groups to eventually be located throughout Junction City, Fort Riley, Chapman, Milford, Wakefield, Ogden, and Riley. Will you pray about attending one of these groups and possibly leading one?

Want to know more about First Southern Baptist Church, come share lunch with us and learn as we walk through Membership 101. Membership 101 will take place on Sep 26, from 1 – 4 in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided. This first class is titled “Membership 101” and will cover membership, baptism, history of the church, expectations of a body of believers, and provide a chance for families to get to know each other better and become involved in small groups. Although this class is focused on those with interest in membership and for new believers, it is open to anyone that would like to attend. I have asked many of our families to attend this session and expect that we will have a good turnout. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the foyer.
Take a moment to sign-up now so that we can provide adequate child care and food.

19"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19 NIV)

Pastor's Update - Week of August 23, 2010
Love God, Love People

It almost feels like a fall day outside. The weather makes me want to eat some pumpkin pie. I guess I will have to wait a few more weeks for that. Let me tell you what we will be eating this Wednesday. If you are from the south you might like the first three items. These items are a special request from one of our West Virginia men, Fried Potatoes w/Onions, Pinto Beans and Corn Bread. For those interested in something else we will have Salmon Patties and Fried Chicken, Cornbread w/Honey, and Pudding. Our chef for the evening is Patti Jo Whitten. You can’t beat the price. The meal never exceeds $7 per family. If you will be our guest for the first time, there is no charge for the meal. After the meal, stay for the Bible Study and children’s activities. Children K-6th grade will continue with “In God’s Army” as they come together this Wednesday for self defense training. Childcare is provided for infants up through pre-kindergarten. The youth B.O.M.B. squad meets at 6:00 p.m. and the adult Bible Study begins at 6:15 p.m. The Adult Bible Study will meet in the Adult III Bible Study room. AWANA leaders/workers will conduct a dry run for their classes.

We have come to a point in our study of Acts where Paul is now in Roman custody and will remain in custody for a few years. Once again saw how God delivers Paul, not by a supernatural miracle, but by His providential ordering of circumstances.   In Acts 23:11 we read that God told Paul he was to go to Roman to share the Gospel with the Romans. As the remainder of chapter 23 unfolds, we took a look at how God’s providence (his divine direction) provided for Paul’s safety as he is transferred to Caesarea under Roman guard, to prevent a gang of Jews from murdering him. The Bible often teaches and illustrates the doctrine of God’s providence; His providence should be a source of great comfort and instruction for every believer. It means that God is not distant, passive, or unconcerned with the daily events in our lives. Rather, as our loving and caring Heavenly Father, He actively governs the daily events of our lives, usually behind the scenes, without in any way robbing us of the duty of making responsible choices. As I closed the teaching on Sunday, I asked you to think about a few questions. Let me remind you what the questions were:

What do you think Paul did during his imprisonment? (hint: he wrote some books; what are the titles)
How do you do during long periods of waiting time?
Can you remember a time of uncertainty in your life? If so, how did you respond?
What testimony can you give to a nonbeliever that God is in control of your life?

This Sunday we will hear from a few of our family members what God has done in their life. You won’t want to miss this wonderful time of sharing.

This Wednesday, August 25, there will be a special event during the AWANA training: our children K-6th grade will be able to actively participate in a self-defense course, taught by Hackerott Leadership Academy. They teach stranger danger and anti-bullying curriculum. The children will need to wear comfortable play clothes, similar to gym clothes, and they will be asked to remove their shoes for this event.

Speaking of AWANA, if your child will be promoted to the next club level and you have uniform items that you would like to donate for other children to have, please bring the items to church on Wednesday evening. Don’t just let them set in a closet gathering dust. Why not put a smile on a child’s face as he/she receives the uniform.

Important AWANA Dates: 1) August 25, AWANA training for all volunteers in any position; 2) September 1, AWANA “dry run” with directors, leaders, secretaries and their children; 3) September 5, AWANA Family Fun Fest/Picnic Kickoff, @ 12:15; and 4) September 8, AWANA begins with Rodeo Round-Up.

Did you come to choir practice last Wednesday? There were twelve men and women who came out to begin preparing for choir specials as well as the Christmas Cantata. We have room for at least twelve more members in the choir. Be part of a great worship ministry team; come out and participate with our choir. Practice is at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

This Saturday, August 28, our church will host a Workshop for Children’s Ministry. Come enjoy training from Marie Clark and Shayla Hale. If you have not registered and would like to come, please join us. Marie Clark has served as Sunday School and VBS Director since 1996 for the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists. Training and consultations with church leaders were also the focus during her years as church services director with the Kansas City Kansas Baptist Association, 1982-2008. Marie often speaks of the importance of laying a spiritual foundation with preschoolers and children through teaching and ministry. Shayla Hale is Children’s Minister at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri, where she has primary responsibility for 1st – 6th grade children and families. Shayla leads conferences for the Missouri Baptist Convention, Greene County Baptist Association and is a LifeWay Ministry Multiplier. VBS is her favorite week of the church year and she believes Sunday School is a foundational tool in reaching kids and families. She is a graduate of Southwest Baptist University and is currently a graduate student at Dallas Baptist University. If you have questions please call Amy Davis at 417-429-5710.

I need your help to accomplish a ministry that feeds the hungry in Junction City and Geary County. Without your assistance I will need to cancel this ministry. Please sign up this weekend so that I can decide if we will conduct the ministry. The ministry is “Stuff The Truck” a ministry to gather food for the Geary County Food Pantry. Last year, our efforts brought in the largest amount of food ever, at one time, to the Food Pantry. This year we want to be able to surpass last year’s total weight. I have scheduled four weekends that we will be collecting food at Wal-Mart and Dillons. The dates and locations that have been secured are: 1) October 1 -2, Dillons; 2) October 15 -16, Wal-Mart; 3) October 29 – 30, Dillons; and 4) November 12-13, Wal-Mart. This is an amazing ministry to be part of. It will take a crew of 4 – 6 persons each day.   A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the foyer for you to sign-up to help. Most importantly, we cannot conduct this ministry without a leader. If you feel that you can lead this ministry, please give me a call. You may team up with someone else to help in leading this ministry. Again without a leader this ministry will not be able to happen. Sign-up today to volunteer your time or to lead this ministry. There are many families in our community that go hungry. Can we be the church that helps to feed those in need?

Membership 101 will take place on Sep 26, from 1 – 4 in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided. This first class is titled “Membership 101” and will cover membership, baptism, history of the church, expectations of a body of believers, and provide a chance for families to get to know each other better and become involved in small groups. Sign-up now so that we can provide adequate child care and food. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the foyer.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NIV)

Come to Church for Chow:    Chicken nuggets, Corn, Coleslaw, Cukes in Cream, and Cupcakes.   We will also serve rice pilaf, grilled squash, tomatoes, and fruit. Come out and C how great this meal is. Our chef for the evening is Barbara Weeks. As a reminder, the meal never exceeds $7 per family. If you will be our guest for the first time, there is no charge for the meal. After the meal, stay for the Bible Study and children’s activities. Children K-6th grade will continue with “In God’s Army” as they come together for music, crafts, games, puppets and snacks. Childcare is provided for infants up through pre-kindergarten. The youth B.O.M.B. squad meets at 6:00 p.m. and the adult Bible Study begins at 6:15 p.m.  The AWANA Basic Training will meet in the Sanctuary. The Adult Bible Study will meet in the Adult III Bible Study room.

This past Sunday I asked, “If the police were to arrest you and charge you with being a Christian, would the evidence against you be so overwhelming that a hearing would not be needed.” In other words, would your actions at school or work, the love that you show to your neighbor, and the way you treat your family be proof that you are indeed a Christian. Could a court charge you with sharing your testimony to the unbelievers? Paul was the kind of man that had overwhelming evidence against him that he was a Christian. He had gone through the Roman Empire spreading the Christian doctrine wherever he went. During our teaching we saw that Paul became somewhat agitated at Ananias, when Ananias commanded the men standing by Paul to slap him on the mouth. Paul called Ananias a “White Washed Wall.” I explained that a “White Washed Wall” refers to the tombs that were painted white so that the Jews would not come into contact with them. Jesus said to this same group that they were “White Washed Tombs” resembling righteousness on the outside but full of hypocrisy and wickedness on the inside. Let us not be guilty of playing the role of a Christian on the outside but full of hypocrisy on the inside. Let us live a life that is good and pleasing to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I for one want to be found guilty beyond any reason for doubt that I am a Christian. How about you? Let me encourage you to let Christ’s light shine through you this week. Let me challenge you to take some time to share your story with a friend or neighbor, and invite them to worship with you this Sunday.

How many of you remember the excitement we shared last year as we conducted “Stuff The Truck” a ministry to gather food for the Geary County Food Pantry? Our efforts brought in the largest amount of food ever, at one time, to the Food Pantry. This year we want to be able to surpass last year’s total weight. As we are planning for this ministry, I have been asked by the Food Pantry to deliver the food in increments instead of all at one time, and to possibly have it before Thanksgiving this year. In listening to their request, I have scheduled four weekends that we will be collecting food at Wal-Mart and Dillons.

Two of our families will soon be bringing home new babies. Our church has had an ongoing ministry to provide a baby basket to the family of newborns. We are currently collecting baby gifts to fill baskets for Donnie and Sasha Wolfe and for Erick and Madison Hernandez. The Wolfe’s are having a girl and the Hernandez’s are having a boy. Let’s show our love and support for these two families by showering them with gifts.

A reminder that all announcements must be turned into Pastor Gabriel by close of business on Tuesday so that the announcement can be printed in the Sunday worship folder. His email address is gphmusic@gmail.com.

Our church will host a Workshop for Children’s Ministry on Aug.28th. Come enjoy training from Marie Clark and Shayla Hale. Registration is due on Aug. 20. Wednesday August 18 will mark the beginning of the AWANA Club year. All adult leaders and workers will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary for “Basic Training!” This is where all your questions will get answered! ALL WORKERS MUST BE PRESENT PLEASE! Childcare is provided! If you are interested in working please attend! This is not the first night for AWANA Club Members. Children of AWANA workers are welcome to attend our Wednesday night children’s program: “In God’s Army” for K-6th grade and playtime in the nursery/toddler/2&3 year old area.

There will be a special event for the August 25 AWANA training: our children K-6th grade will be able to actively participate in a self-defense course, taught by Hackerott Leadership Academy. They teach stranger danger and anti-bullying curriculum. The children will need to wear comfortable play clothes, similar to gym clothes, and they will be asked to remove their shoes for this event.

Choir practice resumes next Wednesday August 18 at 8:00 p.m. Be part of a great worship ministry team; come out and participate with our choir.

27Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4 NIV)

This Wednesday evening Pam Flores and Jean Richardson will be preparing a “South of the Boarder” menu consisting of chicken enchiladas, Nachos and Dessert. Join us at 5:15 for a great meal.

This past Sunday I asked the question, “Do you love to tell the story of what Jesus has done in and through your life?” I mentioned that Paul was one of those men who told his story, his testimony, wherever he was. Whether it was on the river bank sharing with Lydia or chained between two Roman guards, Paul shared the story of his relationship with Christ. Many of us don’t hesitate to share stories about our family or trips we have been on, but we hesitate at the thought of sharing our faith with someone. A recent Gallop Pole showed that only 2% of all Evangelical, American Believers, had introduced another person to Christ." It’s been said that the average Christian is as unprepared facing an unbeliever as they are facing an armed terrorist group, and many would rather face a terrorist. How about you, are you willing to share your story with unbelievers? We must remember that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is for anyone who would receive it. Jew, gentile, biker, homosexuals, whatever, Jesus died for them. As a Christian you have a story to tell. If you have never told your story, why not take some time today to write it down. Think of what is was before you were a believer and what how it is now that you are a believer. How has Christ worked in and through your life. When you write you testimony, make your testimony compelling in the sense you are driven by the love of Christ. Ask the Lord to help you speak as God spoke to you. Then share your testimony with others.

In my update last week I stated that part of our “Vision 2020” is to establish a process within the church that will allow our church family to have a structured educational method for spiritual growth. The goal is to systematically offer four classes on Sunday mornings, each building upon the other. These four classes will be entitled 101, 201, 301, and 401.  The first of the four classes will be held on September 26, from 1 – 4 in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided. This first class is titled “Membership 101” and will cover membership, baptism, history of the church, expectations of a body of believers, and provide a chance for families to get to know each other better and become involved in small groups. This same class will also be offered in October.

There will be a Welcome Luncheon for Mr. and Mrs. Hughes (that’s Gabriel and Beki for those who might be confused) at 12:15 in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday August 15. Not only will this be a luncheon, but it will also be a pounding. Trade some nonperishable food items for a delicious meal.  The meal will consist of fried chicken, salads of all kinds, and dessert. Let’s try to keep the pounding a surprise.

This is a call to our church family to come out this Sunday, August 15, at 4:30 p.m. to celebrate the ordination of Gabriel Hughes and Archie Carpenter. During the celebration, ordained men from our church and other churches from our association will lay hands on these two men and pray over them. Pastor Gabriel will then bring an ordination message. A reception will following in the fellowship hall. This is a great time in our church as we recognize God’s calling on these two men.

Our church will be host a Workshop for Children’s Ministry on Aug.28th. Come enjoy training from Marie Clark and Shayla Hale. Registration is due on Aug. 20th.

Pastor Gabriel has now taken over preparing the announcements for out Sunday Celebrations. All announcements must be turned into Pastor Gabriel by close of business Tuesdays so that the announcement can be printed in the Sunday worship folder. His email address is gphmusic@gmail.com.

One of the families from our church is sponsoring two, girls traveling softball teams. If you have a girl that is interested in playing in a 12 years of age and under or 14 years of age and under league, please call Bob Shefelton at 785-226-4439. Tryouts will be 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, August 14, at the 12th Street Recreation Center ball diamonds.

Have you registered you children for our AWANA club? Registration is ongoing each Sunday in the foyer. Last year we had an amazing adventure as we started our AWANA Club. We had a tremendous turnout of children. You will want to invite your neighbors to come and learn with us.

Many of you have been affilitated with AWANA at other locations where you have lived. If you are interested in assisting with our AWANA club, please make contact with LeAnn Smith at 785-320-0366. As you volunteer with AWANAs you will realize what a difference AWANA makes in the lives of our young children. We don’t just want a good AWANA program; we want a great AWANA program. We welcome all volunteers, passionate about and committed to children, to feel welcomed as assistants or leaders in our AWANA program. Background checks for all adults working with children are completed to promote the safest environment for our children. Won’t you consider being a part of this ministry?

Important AWANA Dates: 1) August 18, “Basic Training” for directors, leaders, secretaries, and workers; 2) August 25, AWANA training for all volunteers in any position; 3) September 1, AWANA “dry run” with directors, leaders, secretaries and their children; 4) September 5, AWANA Family Fun Fest/Picnic Kickoff, @ 12:15; and 5) September 8, AWANA begins with Rodeo Round-Up.

Childcare for “Basic Training” on August 18 will be through our summer Wednesday night children’s program: “In God’s Army” for K-6th grade and playtime in the nursery/toddler/2&3 year old area.

Choir practice resumes next Wednesday August 18 at 7:45 p.m. Be part of a great worship ministry team; come out and participate with our choir.

3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4 NIV)

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us.

Pastor's Update - Week of August 2, 2010
Love God, Love People

Are you ready for another tasty Wednesday Evening Fellowship Meal? We have some families that really know how to whip up a great meal. This Wednesday evening Barbara Weeks will prepare breakfast for dinner. The menu will consist of Bacon and Cheese Quiche, Scrambled Eggs w/Cheese, Biscuits and Gravy, Sausage Patty, Fresh Fruit, and Danish Pastry. Join us at 5:15 for a great meal. Adults will continue their study of Nahum, chapter 3. BOMB Squad has been cancelled.

This past Sunday, we took a look at what happened when Paul arrived in Jerusalem. Paul and his companions met with James and the Elders of the Jerusalem church. I am sure there was much excitement about the great missionaries return to Jerusalem. In Acts chapter 21, we find that the Elders of the church received him warmly. However, there was a storm brewing. Even the Elders knew there would be trouble when they stated, “What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come.” The Jewish believers were still very zealous for the law. They were upset that Paul was going around teaching all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs.” What was Paul teaching? Paul was teaching freedom from the Old Covenant and freedom through the New Covenant in Jesus Christ. The Elders were concerned for the church in Jerusalem, so they asked Paul to “Submit to the authority of the church” in order to retain unity. Paul agreed demonstrating humility and a desire for unity.   Many have asked, “Didn’t this compromise biblical truth?” The answer is no. Paul himself had written in Romans 14 and 15 that such matters were issues of Christian liberty. Remember what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:20-23, “20To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. 22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.” Are you being like Paul? Do you desire unity within the body of believers? Do you show humility? How do you demonstrate those desires? Do you set back and wait for others to come to you, or do you go to the person. It is easy to become like the Jews who begin to riot in Jerusalem. It is better to be like Jesus and forgive those who have wronged you.

The vision statement for our church is currently being refined, and will be entitled “Vision 2020.”  One of the areas that have been discussed is to establish a process within the church that will allow our church family to have a structured educational method for spiritual growth. The goal is to systematically offer four classes on Sunday mornings, each building upon the other. These four classes will be entitled 101, 201, 301, and 401. Each class will be 3 weeks long. The classes will be offered at 9:30 A.M. during the months of February, April, August and October or 11:00 A.M. during the months of March, May, September and November. Since we have so many church families with us for only a short time, it will be made possible for all four classes to be completed in one year. Our 101 class will cover membership, baptism, history of the church, expectations of a body of believers, and provide a chance for families to get to know each other better and become involved in small groups. If approved, Class 101 will become mandatory prior to becoming a member of First Southern Baptist Church. Class 201 will provide a foundation for establishing a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Class 301 will prepare members for ministry, and Class 401 will equip members for missions.

Mark your calendar to attend the Ordination Celebration for Gabriel Hughes and Archie Carpenter on August 15 at 4:30 p.m. During the celebration, ordained men from our church and other churches from our association will lay hands on these two men and pray over them. Pastor Gabriel will then bring an ordination message. A reception will following in the fellowship hall. This is a great time in our church as we recognize God’s calling on these two men.

School is just around the corner. Soon you will be shopping for back to school clothes and supplies. As you begin to think about your children returning to school, let me remind you about our AWANA Club. Last year we had an amazing adventure as we started our AWANA Club. We had a tremendous turnout of children. All of our expectations were exceeded. The goal to lead children to Christ was recognized as nine children gave their life to Christ. Be sure to beat the rush by registering your children early. The registration table will be set up in the foyer this Sunday. You will want to invite your neighbors to come and learn with us.
We have had numerous families be our guests during the summer months. Many of you have a history with AWANAs, either as a child, or as a parent. You realize what a difference AWANA makes in the lives of our young children.

Childcare for “Basic Training” on August 18 will be through our summer Wednesday night children’s program: “In God’s Army” for K-6th grade and playtime in the nursery/toddler/2&3 year old area.

We have had some changes take place during the summer. One of those changes is our new Children’s Ministry Director. Amy Davis has officially taken over the reins. Amy not only has experience with children’s ministry, she also holds a bachelors degree in Religious Education from Southwest Baptist University. Amy will be making a few changes to provide a safer, educational environment for our children and grandchildren.

We have an opening for a Bible Study teacher for Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:45 for our children 4th-6th grade. We also have an opening for our children’s 2&3 year old class from 11:00-12:15. If you are interested in either of these positions, please contact Amy Davis or Terry Butler. Training and mentoring is provided. Substitutes are available if there is concern regarding occasional absences.

Last week, I mentioned that choir practice resumes Wednesday, August 11. The date was incorrect. Please note, choir practice will resume August 18, at 7:45 p.m. I apologize for the confusion.   Now that we have the date cleared up, are you ready to step up and join our choir? How many of you have been to a church that had an amazing choir and dynamic instrumentalists? I see your hands going up. We have an opportunity to have this same kind of choir, but it will not happen without your willingness to participate. I look forward to the day when I look up and see the choir loft filled with joyous singers and talented instrumentalists. Can this happen? I say, “Yes it can.” Come, and grab your neighbor, spouse, or the person sitting next to you in church. Surprise Pastor Gabriel and be here August 18, at 7:45.

Let’s try to keep the pounding a surprise.

The “Life Groups” are beginning to gather steam. I am still searching for a few more families willing to host a group. Over the last two weeks I have had a number of families say, “yes,” to this ministry. Many fear that small groups will cause “cliques” within the church. This is a false assumption. Small groups are where you will find meaningful relationships with people who have similar backgrounds or desires. Would you be willing to host a group? If so, please contact me at 785-301-1728. The following statement has much truth, “As we grow larger we must grow smaller.”

31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. (1Corinthians 10:31-33 NIV)

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us.
